Mr Nicholas James trained at the University of Nottingham Medical School and undertook basic surgical training in Bristol. He trained in Plastic surgery at Bristol, Leicester, Stoke Mandeville Hospitals in addition he undertook fellowships in Adelaide and the Royal Marsden Hospitals.
He was appointed as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in 1996 to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage. Initially his specialist interest was in Head & Neck Reconstruction and he worked in developing a multidisciplinary team with both ENT surgeons and Maxillo-facial Surgeons providing all aspects of reconstructive surgery. A reorganisation of services in Hertfordshire lead to the Head and Neck service relocating from Stevenage to Luton.
Following this reorganisation he developed a special interest in skin cancer and developed the skin cancer MDT in Hertfordshire.
Mr James has developed an interest in medical management and has been Clinical Director for the Plastic Surgery Department and Divisional Chair for Surgery. His present role is Associate Medical Director for Professional Standards and he is the Trust’s Responsible Officer.
He has been Hon Treasurer of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) for the past six years.
Outside the NHS, Mr James is a member of the Medical Advisory committee for Motorsport UK and is Deputy Medical Delegate for the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). He is also Deputy Chief Medical officer for the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) British Grand Prix.
